What's really strange about The Visitors is that it works well as a narrative, but not so much as an adult film. I don't know if director Michael Raven's intended that or not, but the sex took a back seat to the story in almost every way.
Raven does a great job of setting up the storyline -- it's a full 20 minutes before we even get to a sex scene -- by introducing us to the main characters and letting us get to know them. Things quickly get out of hand, however, as more and more denizens of the tiny town of Desert City begin to disappear from their cars and homes in terrible flashes of blue light.
Raven also shows a wonderful grasp of cinematic storytelling: There are more dolly, tracking and crane shots in this film than you'll see in most mainstream movies. Again, great stuff, but I wish the sex would have met the story halfway.
The special effects are top-notch, and the behind-the-scenes footage of how they were done is great. There are those who complain about all of the extra features available on DVDs, but I say, bring 'em on. I love to see the nuts and bolts of a good production, and Wicked has gone all-out for the extras on the second disk.
Catch this one when you're looking for more of a movie and less of an adult movie, and I think you'll be amazed at how good it is.
