Exec Seat: Q&A With MojoHost's Scott “Scooter” Walley

It didn’t take Scott “Scooter” Walley long to gravitate to the adult entertainment industry, and it certainly didn’t take long for him to find his calling working for MojoHost. The long-time adult entertainment industry vet is going on in his fourth year next month with MojoHost, the award-winning company offers managed dedicated hosting, managed virtual hosting, corporate email solutions, colocation and domain registration.

Last month, XBIZ World checked in with Walley, or as most call him, “Scooter,” to find out more about his work at MojoHost and more in this Q&A.

I’m the kind of person that does whatever it takes to help our clients business succeed. I’m constantly working with our tech support team to assist the client’s transition to MojoHost.

XBIZ: How did you venture into the adult entertainment biz, and what exactly do you do at MojoHost?

Walley: When I first started, the adult biz was pretty new. You really needed to know someone to get your foot in the door. It just so happens I did. I went from a small spot on a server to owning my own pretty fast. Soon, I was making four times the amount I was making at my daytime job. It didn’t take long before I quit that job and started doing this full-time. I tried my hand in a lot of different things and soon found my calling working for MojoHost.

My title is vice president of sales, but that doesn’t mean all I do is sales. I’m the kind of person that does whatever it takes to help our clients business succeed. I’m constantly working with our tech support team to assist the client’s transition to MojoHost. One thing I’m happy do is help our clients get whatever they need, even if it’s not hosting. This is the beauty of doing it as long as I have — personal contacts in every facet of our industry.

XBIZ: Tell me about your magnificent data center in Florida. What are the company’s capabilities?

Walley: Our flagship data-center located in Miami is home to more than 2,000 servers. We provided managed service, unmanaged service, colocation, bandwidth and content delivery network services from this and several additional locations. While our physical networks are optimized for high performance, our support team is the skilled at providing an amazing client experience. We proudly serve clients of all sizes, from beginners to most of the largest companies in our industry.

MojoHost is focused on delivering the absolute best experience to all of our customers.

XBIZ: How does MojoHost’s develop its business and find new clients?

Walley: There are three main sources where we get our business.

No. 1: Brad Mitchell and I have both been in this industry for 15-plus years. Over that time, we have made lots of friends, business acquaintances and service thousands of clients. It helps that Brad is a very hands-on owner, happy to get his hands dirty and work in any situation.

No. 2: Word of mouth. Most of our clients are truly happy with our service. They talk about us to their friends and partners and this always leads to more sales.

No. 3: B2B shows. We like to say there is no such thing as a bad conference. We believe its bad attitudes that lead to poor results. Do we always come back from a trade show with tons of new sales? No, but we do get tons of new contacts and that’s when I really start to work. The long tail in this industry is amazing. We never know who our next customer is going to be. Our goal is always to be top of mind as the predominate brand in adult hosting and our entire team is proud to have accomplished this. The quality of our services and the integrity of Mojo’s business practices makes growing our business feel less like work because it’s very rewarding.

Besides keeping relationships current, you also need to stay up on what’s coming in the industry. That’s why we’re always ahead of changes in the industry, our commitment to constant contact with all aspects affecting our clients.

XBIZ: What’s a typical day like?

Walley: Each day at Mojohost has different challenges. I have been working remote for the last 14 years, so I don’t get up and go to an office but I try to keep pretty normal scheduled hours despite the Mojohost support staff never sleeping. Half of our clients are international or in different time zones and while it is true that most of my work is in the Eastern time zone, I often Skype, email and ICQ during the evenings and weekends to meet the needs of new and existing customers.

XBIZ: When not thinking about the biz, what do you like to do?

Walley: I pretty much work all the time so if my phone rings I will answer it. But the rest of the time I’m a normal guy with a family. When I’m not doing something with them, I’m usually out fishing or working in the garage on one of my wood projects. I enjoy living in Florida. I’m two blocks from the beach so it’s pretty hard not to find something to do.
