Google Analytics Offers Users an Opt-Out Tool

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google has introduced a tool that will let users opt-out of having their web activity submitted to Google Analytics.

According to PCMag.com, a desktop browser ad-on that users can download and install will stop data from being sent from their computer when visiting a website that uses Google Analytics Javascript to track traffic.

“Even though Google Analytics doesn’t reveal personal information, we believe in giving users more choice and control whenever possible," Google policy counsel Will DeVries wrote in a blog post.

Google Analytics lets website owners track the traffic coming to their sites.

"Like traffic pattern reports tell you about traffic on a highway or street, Google Analytics provides general trends for a website (numbers of visitors, average time spent on one page) without revealing any personally identifiable information," DeVries wrote.

The tool, currently in beta, will stop information from a visit to a particular website from being sent to Google Analytics and that visit will not be included in its reports.

It currently works on Internet Explorer (versions 7 and 8), Google Chrome (4.x and higher) and Mozilla Firefox (3.5 and higher).
