CANNES, France — At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, B-movie streaming service Cultpix debuted a collection of AI-generated short films drawn from erotic magazine photo spreads published 50 years ago.
Developed by Thomas Meier of Norwegian company Multiformat, the project utilized generative AI tools to transform photo spreads from adult magazines from 1976 into full-motion video with color, synchronized sound, dialogue and voice-over.
In a post on the Cultpix website’s blog, Cultpix CEO Rickard Gramfors wrote, “We want to use the latest technology to stimulate a discussion about attitudes to images that are now half a century old. What was once considered shocking ‘adult’ material now seems remarkably innocent by today’s standards. By bringing these static images to life through AI, we’re creating a conversation between past risqué aesthetics and new technology, exploring how our attitudes to the human body and sexuality have evolved over 50 years.”
Cultpix’s website does not address copyright and permissions issues for the project. However, assuming that the company obtained the appropriate rights and releases, the project represents a potential new application for AI in the development of adult content. By appearing at a festival as notable as Cannes, it also provides a significant example of AI technology being accepted by mainstream audiences.
