WIA Profile: NakedHosting Kacy

How did you get into this business? What in your background prepared you for what you're doing now?

I got started back in 1997 designing websites from home. I met a couple online that provided web hosting services and became friends with them. I started helping them out with sales and my husband worked for them doing part time tech support. He is a Unix guru and together we make a great team. I come from a background of high-level management in the entertainment industry with a major focus on customer service. I have a lot of customer service experience and skills. It wasn't long before I realized that I loved the client interaction that comes with web hosting.

I got started back in 1997 designing websites from home.

I enjoy the everyday challenges and helping other people become successful with their own businesses. Shortly after working with the other couple, we decided to venture on our own and started Naked Hosting with one collocated server in 1999.

What changes have affected your work since you started?

When I started back in 1999, bandwidth prices were ridiculously high! We are talking over $100/mbit. The major changes that affect us over the years are being able to keep competitive in a highly saturated market. Prices fall almost daily in the business, but the demand for high levels of service remain. So there is a constant battle for balance. We pride ourselves on your service and we will never let price dictate the excuse for providing less than stellar care and support.

Does your work affect your personal life?

Well, other than my kids telling to get off the computer all the time!

I am not going to lie, the hosting business is demanding. I have to be there for my customers and I am there. It's a 24/7 job no matter how much staff you have; for me, as the owner, I need to know what is happening at all times. I also am very conscientious about making time for my family.

The reason I got started in the Internet business to begin with was so that I could work from home and be with my kids. I am lucky to have been able to do for all these years and be there for them. Again, it’s that balance thing.

What's the most difficult thing about being a woman in this industry? Has it changed with time?

Probably being taken seriously. Back in the day, when I was younger, I would ALWAYS get mistaken for "content" at the shows. Hey, its flattering don't get me wrong. Most people are very surprised when start talking me to see just how "techie" I am. I am truly a nerd at heart.

Growing Site Revenue Under Ever-Changing Compliance Rules

Over the past year, many merchants have reported earnings that were flat or even a bit down. This is due to three main factors: age verification regulations, click-to-cancel rules, and banks backing away from cross-sales due to regulatory requirements and the rollout of the Visa Acquiring Monitoring Program (VAMP).

Over the past year, we’ve watched adult merchants weather a variety of disruptions and speedbumps. Some even lost entire revenue streams overnight — simply because they relied too heavily on a single cloud provider that suffered an outage, lacked sufficient redundancy and failover, or otherwise fell short when it came to making sure their business was protected in case of unwelcome surprises.
