FSC Launches 'Know Your Rights' 1st Amendment Resource Page

LOS ANGELES — The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has launched "Know Your Rights," a resource page detailing First Amendment protest guidelines.

The announcement follows:

May 1 is International Workers’ Day, a day rooted in labor organizing, collective action, and the fight for safer working conditions. For many sex workers, showing up in public spaces, whether at protests, rallies, or industry events, carries additional risks shaped by stigma, profiling, and criminalization.

To support safer participation, the Free Speech Coalition has released a new Know Your Rights resource page alongside a recent webinar, Thou Doth Protest- Knowing Your Rights as an Activist, presented by FSC Board Chair and criminal defense attorney Jeffrey Douglas and FSC’s Industry Relations Advocate Lotus Lain.

The resource brings together key legal information and harm-reduction strategies for sex workers navigating public spaces in California.

What the Resource Covers

The page outlines core First Amendment protections, including the right to speak, assemble, and document law enforcement in public. It also provides practical guidance on how to prepare for a protest, how to respond if approached by police, and what to do in the event of arrest or property seizure.

Understanding how these laws interact is critical, especially in situations where enforcement may still rely on profiling or assumptions about intent.

Watch the Webinar + Explore the Resource

The full webinar is now available to watch, and the resource page can be used as a quick reference before, during, and after attending a protest.
