Guerilla Traffic Has New Leads in Spam Attack, Offers Reward

TORONTO — After getting hit by millions of unsolicited spam emails over Labor Day weekend that contained references to “Lolita” or “child porn” with embedded links to its websites, Guerilla Traffic has decided to offer a reward for information leading to catching the culprit.

Uncaged Marketing Inc., Guerilla Traffic’s parent company is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the malicious attack. An anonymous affiliate program kicked in an additional $5,000 to the cause, bringing the total reward money to $30,000.

“There have been millions of unsolicited spam emails going out to other webmasters and the general public that are being falsely tagged as coming from us,” Guerilla Traffic’s George D. told XBIZ. “We think they’re operating some remove or complaint list and mailing these ads to them. We want to go on record saying this isn’t us.”

The company noticed the problem a few months ago on a smaller scale.

According to George D., Guerilla Traffic has developed a few promising leads after offering the reward money. He said evidence compiled by system administrators points to the origin of the attacks coming from overseas.

“It seems like whoever is doing this is using stolen proxies to send these emails out,” George D. said.

In other words, the spammer is hijacking compromised PCs and creating a virtual botnet to send out scores of unsolicited spam messages. In most cases, the user doesn’t know a spammer is using their computer surreptitiously, or that their machine is vulnerable to these types of attacks.

Anyone with information about the attack can contact George D. at Guerilla Traffic at (416) 533-6000, or by email at george@guerillatraffic.com.
