Adam & Eve Founder Honored for Human Rights

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Phil Harvey, president and founder of Adam & Eve, was honored June 30 by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) with its Humanitarian Award.

The 38th annual AASECT Conference, held in St. Louis, Miss., is a four-day workshop, which culminates in an awards luncheon that honors prominent figures in sex education.

AASECT membership cuts across a wide swath of various communities in many different professions. The nonprofit AASECT is comprised of sexuality educators, sex counselors, sex therapists, physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, health professionals, clergy members, lawyers, sociologists, family counselors, family planning specialists and researchers, as well as students.

According to the AASECT website, “These individuals share an interest in promoting understanding of human sexuality and healthy sexual behavior.”

Lloyd Sinclair, a colleague of Harvey’s, presented him with the Humanitarian Award for “his outstanding contributions to the promotion of civil, sexual and human rights.”

In his speech, Sinclair cited Harvey’s long history of philanthropy, his battle for 1st Amendment rights, Adam & Eve’s DVD-screening process that ensures it distributes sex-positive material and his monetary contributions that “promote reproductive health, family planning and AIDS prevention in some of the world’s poorest countries.”

“I am proud to be recognized by such a fine and compassionate group of professionals,” Harvey said. “It is an honor to be a part of your organization.”

Adam & Eve’s parent company, PHE Inc., has been honored before as well, winning the Hillsborough-Orange County Chamber of Commerce’s “Business of the Year” in 2005.
