When you hear the name Scott Nails, certain images probably come to mind. On this sweltering summer afternoon, however, the only nailing in sight is happening beneath the swing of a hammer.
More than 25 years after shooting his first scene, the veteran performer is somewhere in California's San Fernando Valley, where the relentless heat has him wandering around the property in search of a patch of shade. Dressed in a weathered cowboy hat with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, he tugs the brim lower to shield his face from the sun.
"I'm just trying not to get sunspots," the 44-year-old jokes.
Once he settles into the shade, Nails gestures toward the project taking shape around him. He's building a wrestling facility for about 15 students, relying almost entirely on donated materials and a healthy dose of ingenuity.
"We're trying to put up a building so they can all wrestle," he says. "We're doing it almost entirely through donations and free materials. The floor is made from pallets, and we're spending as little as possible, but we're almost done."
Ironically, the foundation for his 25-year career was laid after an ordinary day of swinging a hammer took an unexpected turn.
"It was just pure coincidence," he recalls. "I never thought it out, never watched porn, and didn't even know California was a hub for the adult industry."
Six Hours to Hollywood
Back in May of 2000, a six-hour drive to support his then-girlfriend first brought Nails out west and ultimately into the adult industry.
At the time, the future adult star was an 18-year-old construction worker in Phoenix, dating an exotic dancer who called him from a shoot after producers asked her to perform acts she hadn't agreed to.
"She was crying and said, 'They want me to fuck dudes,'" he says.
Nails promised to pick her up as soon as his shift ended, and that evening, he climbed into his '78 Ford and made the trip from Arizona to California.
"I pull up and she starts loading her stuff into my truck, and then the agent says, 'Well, you can fuck her,'" Nails recalls. "I said, 'That's not up to me. That's up to her.'"
After talking it over, his girlfriend decided she wanted to go through with the scene, and with her encouragement and little to lose, Nails agreed to give it a shot.
"I think I made 50 bucks," he says with a shrug. "It wasn't about the money. I made good money doing construction. It was more like, 'If you can make a bag, go for it.' So we literally shot the scene right then, at like midnight."
'I just went to work.'
What followed that fateful night was a whirlwind Nails never saw coming. Over the next several months, the couple traveled together, shooting roughly 10 scenes before the relationship eventually ran its course. By then, however, producers had taken notice of Nails.
Then, after repeatedly ignoring calls from the same agent from his first scene, Nails finally agreed to return to California for what he assumed would be a weekend trip.
"By then I'd already shot for Suze Randall and done some stills, so people kind of knew who I was," he says. "Then I went to see Anabolic, and they offered me a contract."
Nails figured he could split his time between construction in Phoenix and shooting in California, but it didn't take long to realize the industry didn't work that way. So, he committed to the business.
After several years under contract with Anabolic, he briefly tested free agency before deciding he preferred the stability of long-term relationships with studios like Digital Playground and Brazzers.
"I always had film on my left hand and the internet on my right," he says. "I'd get two companies that didn't butt heads, they'd guarantee me a certain amount every month, and that was it. I just went to work."
Five Percent
Since his career began, the rise of creator platforms like OnlyFans has transformed the industry, giving performers unprecedented control over their content, schedules and income. And while many embraced the new model, Nails discovered it simply wasn't the right fit for him.
"I think it's great that performers have this outlet," he says. "Back in the day, a lot of girls were only working 10 or 15 days a month. They didn't know what to do with the other days, and it was detrimental. Now they can pour all that energy into content and make good money – it opens up other doors."
For Nails, however, those doors can wait.
"I jumped in and tried it with the best intentions, but it's just not me," he admits. "There are people who can do this 30 days a month. But for me, porn is a part of my life, but it's more like 5% of my life."
The other 95% belongs to his family.
"That's why porn is 5%," he says. "All of my energy is going into them. I just think it's going to benefit me the most."
Reading the Room
Despite his blue-collar roots, Nails has become known for memorable performances that go well beyond simply showing up for work. One of his recent favorites was Lenny, the lovable oddball from Ricky Greenwood's "In the Bag."
The role couldn't look less like the man sitting in the Valley wearing a cowboy hat and work clothes.
"I think I kept that outfit," Nails says with a laugh, referring to Lenny's eccentric purple suit and glittering shoes.
Yet beneath the costume is an approach to acting that Nails says he has been quietly refining since his early days with Brazzers.
"I don't read scripts or anything until I'm on set, then I just feel the energy of what everyone else is doing,” he explains. “I learned a long time ago to imagine it's a silent film. If you took the sound out, could people still watch a scene and go, 'Oh, you're embarrassed,' or 'Oh, you're excited?'"
Building Balance
Ask Nails where he hopes to be five years from now, and his answer has little to do with bigger contracts or busier shooting schedules because he's already found a rhythm that suits him.
That balance allows Nails to focus on his four children and a growing community of homeschooling families. Along with wrestling, students learn life skills through shared meals and community projects, while Nails works to launch a nonprofit to support it all.
"It's really cool to watch," he says. "You teach someone to cook, and then all of a sudden they're cooking for others. Or you teach someone math and say, 'All right, you're in charge of the money box at the lemonade stand.'"
For Nails, the work happening off-set has become every bit as meaningful as the work happening on it. Fortunately, after 25 years in the business, he no longer feels like he has to choose between the two.
"Obviously, I like to grow, but I'm happy right where I'm at," he says. "I love doing three or four big projects a year, then filling it in with beautiful women in between. It's an easy life."
He smiles.
"That's all I want."
