Device Brings Big Screen to IPod

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Wearable video displays have been around for years — even decades if you include military applications — but the latest device from eMagin marks the first time a display has been developed specifically for iPod Video players.

The new EyeBud 800 promises a video environment similar to watching a 105-inch display from 12 feet away, as well as increased resolution compared to existing Video iPod quality.

Scheduled to debut on the market sometime during the first half of 2006, the EyeBud already has won an Innovations Design and Engineering Award for the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

While the new wearable video display is by no means the first to enter the ever-expanding iPod accessory market, it is by far the priciest with retail prices expected around $600, more than the iPod itself.

The EyeBud is controlled via a small device similar in size to an iPod and includes a headgear system reminiscent of its earlier applications in both the military and gaming industries, which a user wears over one eye.

The EyeBud 800 is essentially a consumer version of eMagin’s Z800 3DVisor, which uses a viewer that covers both eyes instead of just one, and implements advanced head-tracking technology that lets users look around their virtual environment. The Z800 retails for just under $900.
