TipsBase combines traditional social-networking bells and whistles — profiles, comments — with a user-generated pool of knowledge organized with a tagging system.
Users on the site post explanations for how to perform various tasks in a wide variety of categories that include cooking, home repair, finance and others. The site's utility for adult webmasters can be found in its "computers and Internet" section, which features information on search-engine optimization, network maintenance and other topics.
TipsBase also features a "dating and sexuality" section, although it doesn't include any information on adult entertainment. Basic searches for "porn" and "sex" returned no results on TipsBase. The site did, however, include a link to porn-related content on Amazon.com with such searches.
Tech analyst Robin Wauters noted that the website Tipstrs.com already offers a similar array of services. She also said she prefers tip-centered websites that concentrate on one category, not several.
But her biggest concern about TipsBase is its moderation system — there isn't one.
"They’re … going to have a hell of a time moderating incoming tips," she wrote for TechCrunch.com. "Having your community flag spam and adult material is one thing, but I think the quality of the tips is what would make users come back for more, and there’s no way to assure that when all it takes for people to start sharing tips is providing their email address and picking a password."
