Let's talk about something many creators stress over: setting your rates. Tip menus, private shows, goal bars, contests — practically every number you put on the screen says something about the value of your time. Yet too many creators price from a place of fear: “What if no one tips?”
That fear can lead to undercharging, weak boundaries and eventually burnout. Instead, I want to talk about setting rates strategically, because sex work is not easy money, but you also don’t need to stake your financial goals on a random whale taking you private. You have more control over your success than you might realize.
One of my top-selling tip menu items of all time? “I love you” for 1,000 tokens, in which men pay for the privilege of telling me how much they love me. You really never know what will resonate, so know your niche and don’t be afraid to experiment.
The Biggest Mistake Creators Make With Pricing
Some newbie creators undercharge and keep doing it long after they aren’t newbies anymore. Others let insecurity push them into a race to the bottom, while even successful creators can worry that raising rates will cost them fans.
What do all these problems have in common? Boundaries. Without them, you can end up dreading your streams, comparing yourself to other creators and resenting your work. You also make it much harder to enforce your worth financially. The creators who succeed aren't racing to the bargain basement to see who will do the most for the least. They know who they are, honor what they're comfortable doing and, perhaps most importantly, know how to say "no."
So, How Do You Decide What to Charge?
First, look at the market. Visit fellow creators' rooms and research what people are charging, not to compare yourself but to understand the landscape. Please don't poach, and don’t feel like you have to lurk, either. Say hi and leave a tip! That’s actually how I’ve befriended other creators.
Then, know your niche and what makes your approach uniquely yours. Most importantly, don’t let clients who feel entitled to more for less determine your prices. When I consider raising a rate, I ask myself: “Why do I want to change this price?” The answer usually tells me something important about my goals, my business or my fan community. Then I experiment. Raise one or two menu items or bump your private rate a little and see what happens. Just don’t fall into the trap of pricing something you dislike higher because you assume fewer people will request it.
Whether “spank ass” costs 5 tokens or 20, someone could request it a dozen times. Now you’ve spent half an hour spanking your ass until you’re annoyed and bored. Remember, price doesn’t always determine demand. If something makes you feel “meh” or uncomfortable, you don’t have to offer it in the first place. Respect your boundaries, and block the hagglers and haters.
Staying on Top of Your Tip Menu
A “tried and true” tip menu may feel safe, but you could be leaving money on the table while making your streams less engaging for you and your fans. I’m always tweaking my tip menus. And yes, that’s menus, plural.
As a femdom creator who ventures into fetish territory, I have a standard menu plus two others for fans who want to explore those non-vanilla happy places. I keep them manageable by being selective and grouping similar activities.
Tip menus are also a great place to test new prices. I usually give a change two weeks to a month and watch what happens. Sometimes, what resonates with fans completely surprises me. Private Shows vs. Public Chat
I prioritize public chat and my regular streams because it’s a misconception that private shows are always more lucrative. We all love a good whale, sure, but when your chat is popping and you’re in the flow, leaving for a private can kill that momentum.
If my stream is especially busy, I pass on private requests. Instead, I keep the room engaged. I might praise a tipper and tell everyone else to let him know how awesome he is, or turn an individual tip into a challenge: “Who can top that?” or “Who can help him out?” Good repeat clients are key to your income, so be gracious no matter what someone tips.
I still offer privates, but with boundaries that protect my time and earning power. I charge a fee just to DM me about a private, which helps weed out time-wasters, and require clients to tell me what they want beforehand. If they can’t handle basic communication? Pass.
Success and Overcoming a Scarcity Mindset
I came from a blue-collar background, where “the hustle” permeated every fiber of my being. Days off were something to earn or feel guilty about, and I carried that scarcity mindset into sex work. The problem is that online creator work makes it incredibly easy to never really clock out. You might end a stream, but your notifications and DMs are still right there. So how do you keep yourself from treating your career like one never-ending shift? Boundaries.
You have to overcome the fear that taking a break, saying no or raising your rates will somehow leave you “without.” I still struggle with it. As my career has grown, that blue-collar work ethic and scarcity mindset sometimes turn into bouts of imposter syndrome. I used to overwork myself thinking, “I got this” ... until I didn’t. As it turns out, "the hustle" can be a shortcut to burnout and self-sabotage.
If you can relate, remember that you have talent, your work has value and you're allowed to take a day off. Don't overlook the power of community, either. Connecting with fellow creators at XBIZ and Chaturbate events has helped me realize I'm not alone in these experiences and appreciate how far I've come.
Remember: You're Always Worth It
Look at the market. Talk to other creators. Track your data, experiment and make informed decisions about what works for your business. But underneath it all, remember that pricing expresses boundaries. You don't need to race competitors to the bottom or treat every dollar you turn down as money you've lost. Your fans show up for you because you are you.
Your individuality is an asset. Love it. Own it. And always know that you're worth it.
