WIA Profile: Nefertiti Mitchell

Local retailers are the backbone of the pleasure industry. Driven by passionate business owners who are deeply dedicated to sexual wellness, brick-and-mortar stores serve as safe spaces that uplift and delight customers — while greasing the wheels of commerce for manufacturers and distributors.

Los Angeles-area boutique Ghettoff aims to embody all of those attributes. Though it has just one location, Ghettoff has managed to spawn its own unique brand ethos. Not only is it the area’s only Black female-owned adult store, but it provides a discreet, one-on-one “concierge” shopping experience for all who enter. The shop also hosts manufacturer reps, sex-ed events and parties that have made Ghettoff so popular that potential shoppers happily line up around the block to attend.

Our customers love the feeling they get when they enter our store and realize this experience is just for them — the store is all theirs.

In addition to her devotion to the pleasure sector, owner and executive director Nefertiti Mitchell credits her bout with cancer for ultimately strengthening her resolve, as she funneled her own fear into an unextinguishable flame that has helped fuel Ghettoff’s success. Now cancer-free, Mitchell continues her crusade to create a welcoming, inclusive experience where folks of all races, genders and kinks can keep their pleasure passions burning bright.

In this month’s edition of Women in Adult, we highlight Nefertiti Mitchell for her perseverance and dedication to improving lives — and sex lives — in her community.

XBIZ: What makes Ghettoff unique?

Nefertiti Mitchell: We’re proud of the name Ghettoff because it speaks to our roots and the resilient, street-smart vibe of Inglewood and nearby communities. Our space is inclusive and inviting, encouraging people to feel comfortable exploring adult toys while honoring the unique culture and spirit of our neighborhood.

Our aim was to create an adult store that’s both welcoming and sophisticated, blending the high-end quality of a luxury boutique with the warmth and authenticity of a local shop. Inside, we’ve curated a range of sexual wellness products that are body-safe and approachable for everyone. It’s an exclusive “concierge” showroom boutique where anyone could come in and feel comfortable talking about their wants and desires without others eavesdropping or judging their kink.

Beyond being an adult toy shop, Ghettoff is about breaking down stigmas and offering high-quality, body-safe products that support connection and self-discovery. Our goal is to help people feel confident, empowered and fulfilled.

XBIZ: How does your one-on-one “concierge” approach benefit your business and clients?

Mitchell: At Ghettoff, offering one-on-one consultations for sex toys in a private setting has been a core part of our approach. Our customers have two options. They can book private appointments for discreetness, in which we can also lower the blinds for them, or they can visit during our open hours from 5 p.m. to midnight, Wednesday through Saturday. Even with our open hours, we only allow one customer in the store at a time. We often have lines outside. Our concierge will assist folks waiting outside with visuals from our iPad to get a feel for what they are looking for while they wait.

Our customers love the feeling they get when they enter our store and realize this experience is just for them — the store is all theirs. Based on our reviews, our customers don’t seem to have a problem with waiting for this intimate experience! It allows them to explore sexual wellness products with confidence, ensuring they find the perfect fit. Our clients appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and the ability to discuss personal needs openly. This tailored, supportive experience has been a real advantage for us and for our clients.

XBIZ: Your store also offers bachelorette and sex toy parties. How do these events fit into your business model?

Mitchell: Our private parties and events have become incredibly popular, especially in a challenging year. These events allow groups to explore adult toys and sexual wellness products in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, often sparking laughter and connection. We offer personalized guidance, making the experience both educational and entertaining. In a time when many are seeking unique, memorable gatherings, these private events at Ghettoff offer something different and fulfilling. They’ve allowed us to stand out among adult sex toy stores and bring our community together in a positive, open way.

XBIZ: How did your 2021 diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer impact you as an entrepreneur?

Mitchell: My cancer journey taught me resilience and deepened my passion for sexual wellness and self-care. It’s incredibly rewarding to turn such a challenging experience into a meaningful career focused on helping others.

XBIZ: What advice would you give to other women seeking a career in the pleasure industry?

Mitchell: Embrace your unique perspective and remember that your voice is powerful. The pleasure industry needs more Black women and women of color to bring diversity and inclusivity to sexual wellness spaces. Start by networking with others in the field, seeking mentorship and educating yourself on sexual wellness products to build confidence. Don’t be afraid to challenge norms and advocate for inclusivity. There’s room to make an impact by understanding the needs of diverse communities and creating safe spaces. Be bold, stay authentic and know that your contribution can help shape the industry.

Each month, XBIZ spotlights the career accomplishments and outstanding contributions of Women in Adult. WIA profiles offer an intimate look at the professional lives of the industry’s most influential businesswomen.

Why It's Time for Adult Retail to Embrace AI

In the late 1980s, I was working in the rental car business. My first company didn’t have a single computer. Everything — contracts, inventory, employee records — was done by hand. If you wanted a report, you dug through paper files and crunched numbers on a calculator. It was tedious, but it was all we knew.

How Pleasure Brands Can Ethically Market to LGBTQ+ Communities

Every June, the rainbow floodgates open. Suddenly, pleasure products are “Pride-themed,” companies change their logos and brands rush to show just how inclusive they are — at least for 30 days. But as a queer, nonbinary marketing strategist who works with adult brands year-round, I’m here to say: Rainbow dildos alone are not progress. They’re often just noise.
