Child Protection, Civil Liberties Groups File Amicus Briefs in Support of FSC Court Petition

LOS ANGELES — Several child protection and civil liberties groups have filed amicus briefs in support of the Free Speech Coalition's (FSC) petition to the Supreme Court.

FSC released the following statement about the briefs:

Major national and international organizations have filed amicus briefs with the United States Supreme Court in support of FSC’s petition for a writ of a certiorari in Free Speech Coalition v Paxton. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Woodhull Freedom Foundation (WFF), International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC) and a coalition of mainstream authors, publishers, booksellers and free speech advocates (American Booksellers for Free Expression, Authors Guild, Association of American Publishers, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Freedom to Read Foundation) have all asked the court to hear the Texas case.

An amicus curiae, also known as an amicus brief, or “friend of the court” brief, is a legal filing submitted by individuals or organizations who are not party to the case, but who believe they can offer expertise, insight or other information important for the court to consider.

“We’re proud to have so many respected and reasoned voices supporting our petition,” says Alison Boden, Executive Director of Free Speech Coalition. “They believe, as we do, that the age-verification measures proposed in Texas violate the First Amendment. While we continue to challenge these laws in other jurisdictions, we look forward to having the Texas case heard on the merits.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan represent the Free Speech Coalition and their co-plaintiffs in bringing the petition.
