HTTP accounted for approximately 46 percent of all Internet traffic on the survey. This was attributed to streaming audio and video in web downloads. P2P traffic was in second place, at 37 percent. Newsgroups, non-HTTP video streaming, gaming and VoIP were the next widely used applications.
The HTTP traffic breaks down to 45 percent web page downloads, 36 percent streaming video and 5 percent streaming audio. The YouTube website accounts for approximately 20 percent of all HTTP traffic in the survey, which was nearly 10 percent of all Internet traffic in the survey.
"The adult industry sees this and moves with it. We lead the charge and things follow us. VHS, DVD and the Internet all followed that pattern. But with YouTube and MySpace, we're following the mainstream world," Tony Morgan, CEO of web hosting provider NationalNet, told XBIZ. NationalNet "They created entirely new things to do on the computer that nobody ever did before. We used to read the news, email and look at porn. Now I can chat with friends, I can show my pictures of my son's baseball game. This is quickly becoming more than we thought the Internet would be used for."
