Center for Sex & Culture: GiveOUT Day Hours Extended

SAN FRANCISCO — The Center for Sex & Culture (CSC) announced extended donation hours for Give OUT Day, the national day of giving to LGBTQ and allied organizations across the country, to 11:59 p.m. EST/ 8:59 p.m. PST tonight. The event kicked off yesterday.

“Every donor we get will help us directly and will help us claim our share of awards from participating grantors, like our friends at Horizons Foundation,” a CSC spokesperson said. “Last year we placed high on the national leader board. This year we hope to do even better, but we need your help.”

CSC co-founder and sexologist Dr. Carol Queen shared a donation story from yesterday about her friend Shar who texted Queen to tell her that she donated $21 in honor of the anniversary of the night she met her wife Jackie.

“They got married long before marriage equality was the “thing” it is today (I well remember their frisky reception, full of friends, at the late, lamented, Kimo's on Polk Street),” Dr. Queen said. “When they could wed for real at City Hall, of course they did. I was there the night they met, in 1993, and I could see that theirs would be a great love story. And I was there in 1974, when I started hanging out at the Gay People's Alliance at the University of Oregon and heard people talk about getting married for real. We do change this culture by our beliefs and actions — never doubt that for a minute!”

CSC also announced some additional donation incentives. Razoo, the site hosting the donations, has decided to lower its fee to 2.9 percent for every donation; Razoo is also awarding $250 “rainbow tickets” every hour today, which are drawn randomly. Each donation yields one entry into the lottery.

Those interested in following CSC’s progress and/or want to help build buzz around the event, can follow their social media accounts, as well as the hashtags #giveOUTday, #Lost2Gain24, #GenrosityWins and #sexandculture.

In 2013, Give OUT Day reportedly raised more than $600,000, from 5,474 individuals in support of over 400 nonprofit groups across the country.

The CSC raised more than $15,000 in a single day, which its representatives say helped support them throughout the rest of the year, and helped build their new Development and Outreach Programs.
