LOS ANGELES — XBIZ will examine the evolving feminist porn movement in a featured seminar this Friday at the XBIZ 360 Adult Film Conference in Hollywood.
Titled “Feminist Porn: Inside the Movement,” an accomplished group of panelists that includes academics, producers, a retail leader and a star performer will explore the landscape and its impact on the world of adult entertainment.
The discussion is set for noon to 12:50 p.m. inside the Great Room 2 at the W Hotel.
The confirmed speakers include: Courtney Trouble, founder of TROUBLEFilms and QueerPorn.tv; Lynn Comella, a professor and sexuality scholar at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; Jackie Strano, executive vice president of the retail chain, Good Vibrations; April Flores, award-winning performer; and Jacky St. James, the award-winning screenwriter and director for New Sensations. Constance Penley, a professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California-Santa Barbara and co-editor of the Feminist Porn Book, will moderate the session.
“I am honored to have been asked to moderate the panel on the burgeoning feminist porn movement with so many of the smart, talented people who have been making it happen, across academia and the adult industry,” Penley said.
“We will engage with the audience in answering such questions as, ‘What makes porn feminist? What are some of the strategies for creating and disseminating feminist porn? Why should the industry care about feminist porn? Where is it going in the future—will it make a difference to defending and expanding sexually explicit representation?’”
Comella remarked, “The topic of feminist porn is just so hot right now, and one of the great things about this panel is that you have one of the editors of the Feminist Porn Book moderating alongside a really terrific lineup of both academics and industry people. I think it has all the markings of a really groundbreaking seminar. I'm excited to be part of it.”
XBIZ published a report on the state of the movement in the June 2013 issue of XBIZ Premiere with insights from several content producers and activists who believed that feminist porn is experiencing a significant growth period.
The XBIZ 360 Adult Film Conference is being held concurrently with the Digital Media Conference this Thursday and Friday. The lineup seminars will target every major area of the business of adult movie creation and distribution. The conference also will feature a special keynote presentation by Scott Taylor, founder of New Sensations.
