Colin Rowntree to Host Movie Nights at XBIZ Summit

MIAMI — Wasteland CEO Colin Rowntree will host two nights of iconic films during XBIZ Summit, presented by AWEmpire, at the all-inclusive luxury venue, the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Miami’s famed Coconut Grove.

Rowntree’s mini film festival will be held on May 14 at 10 p.m. with a showing of “Deep Throat,” and on May 15 at 10 p.m., when “Scareface” will be featured.

“I jumped at the opportunity to be the host of this mini movie festival at the XBIZ Summit,” Rowntree said. “When XBIZ asked me to set it up, the Turner Classic Movies with Robert Osborne as the host rang true to me as far as my contribution. So, I will put on my formal suit and film the intros to ‘Deep Throat’ and ‘Scarface’ for the edification and amusement of all!”

“Deep Throat,” released in 1972, was the top-selling film in all of Hollywood until the release of the first “Jaws” movie, even despite carrying an X-rated film in the pre-DVD/VCR/Internet era. The movie marks a turning point in commercial erotica, whereby the focus of sexual pleasure for women becomes the center point, as seen through the experiences of the Linda Lovelace character. “Deep Throat,” which is the flagship film from Arrow Productions, was written and directed by Gerard Damiano and produced by Louis Peraino.

Coincidentally, “Deep Throat,” was shot in Coconut Grove, not very far from where XBIZ Summit is being held.

The film is shown at the XBIZ Summit courtesy of Deep Throat Digital, the virtual home for “Deep Throat” and many of the world's classic erotica film brands, including “The Devil in Miss Jones,” “Alice in Wonderland” (a porn musical) and hundreds of the top classic sex films of all time.

“Scarface” is a 1983 crime film directed by Brian De Palma, written by Oliver Stone, produced by Martin Bregman, and starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana. The film tells the story of a Cuban refugee who comes to Miami in 1980 with the Mariel Boatlift, and becomes a drug cartel kingpin during the cocaine boom of the 1980s.

“Scarface” was given an X rating three times (original, second, and third cuts) for extreme violence, frequent strong language and hard drug usage. Director Brian De Palma pulled in a panel of experts, including real narcotics officers, who stated that the film was an accurate portrayal of the real-life drug underworld and should be widely seen. This convinced the 20 members of the ratings board to give the third cut an "R" rating by a vote of 18 to 2. De Palma later asked the studio if he could release the original director's cut, but was told that he could not. However, since the studio executives did not know the differences among the three submitted cuts, De Palma released the director's cut to theaters anyway with an unapproved "R” rating.
