MOSCOW — The cyber crime department of Russia’s Interior Ministry plans on getting tough on the country’s ISPs when their customers share copyrighted or otherwise illegal material, according to a report on TorrentFreak.
The government has moved to hold ISPs responsible for illegal file-sharing.
Officials are currently carrying out nationwide checks on ISP networks, the report said.
Penalties for direct copyright infringement in Russia can mean six years' imprisonment.
Extending liability to third parties is something being worked into a series of amendments to the country’s Civil Code proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev and passed to the State Duma last week. The third-party liability law could be in force as early as September.
