China Shuts Down 50 Porn Microblogs

BEIJING — China’s crackdown on Internet porn was stepped up today as state authorities shut down 50 microblogs for distributing vulgar content.

"The microblogs were shut down for violations that include carrying pornographic images and videos, information for prostitution, as well as illegal advertising for sex-related drugs and productions," said the Xinhua news agency.

According to reports, Twitter-like microblogs are extremely popular and are being used by more than 200 million Chinese as a public social arena causing concern among officials who want stricter control.

Members of the public reported the microblogs, according to an unidentified official at one of the country's Internet regulators, the State Internet Information Office.

China prohibits all forms of porn, prostitution and all sexual content in public media and the Internet.

Internet and cell phone porn has been effectively controlled in China since it began its cruisade in 2009.

Xinhua said, "Authorities will continue to take measures to cut down on new channels used for spreading pornography and vulgar material."

No other details were revealed.
