HARTFORD, Conn. — Porn will be banned in Connecticut state prisons as of June 30, 2012.
Department of Corrections Commissioner Leo Arnone announced today that inmates have a year to dispose of any sexually explicit materials and must allow subscriptions to sex periodicals expire.
Sexually explicit material is defined by the department as photos of sexual activity or nudity, except, — when taken as a whole — they are “literay, artitistic, educational or scientific” in nature.
According to reports, the current rules let inmates have porn as long as it does not depict children, bestiality, S&M or the use of force.
“This material is detrimental to the safety and security of our institutions, to our efforts to rehabilitate the offender population and it creates a hostile work environment for our staff,” Arnone said.
He added, “We have done a review of how other states around the country have handled this issue and believe an overall ban is the most appropriate approach.”
After June 30, prisoners found to have porn will have it confiscated and will face disciplinary action.
