Playboy Launches Searchable Web Archive

LOS ANGELES — Playboy has launched a new website where viewers can view a collection of 53 digital back issues of Playboy magazine, one from each year — 1954-2007 — without charge.

Each digital issue in the web archive will appear exactly as it did — including advertisements — in the original print edition of Playboy. The site is a collaboration between Playboy Enterprises Inc. and Bondi Digital Publishing LLC.

"Playboy has an incredibly rich history and an intensely loyal readership," Playboy Founder Hugh M. Hefner said. "This is the perfect opportunity to offer them something they have always wanted and also a great way to allow a whole new generation to easily explore the magazine."

Bondi Digital Publishing scanned and re-typed each issue of Playboy. The system loads entire magazines using Microsoft's Silverlight technology. Bondi previously developed the platform for "The Complete New Yorker" DVD-ROM set that was sold in bookstores, digitized the first 40 years of Rolling Stone and is in the process of digitizing the complete Playboy magazine archive, the first of which, "The '50s," was released in 2007.

Bondi's online digital publishing platform was created with the help of Vertigo, a Microsoft Partner of the Year award winner. The platform offers an end-to-end system for publishing and monetizing back archives of magazines on the web.

The website can be accessed at PlayboyArchive.com
