UStream.tv Unveils Streaming Video iPhone App

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Streaming video has arrived on the iPhone, but can adult exploit it?

Online video website UStream.tv released its video-streaming iPhone application two days ago, and in its first 24 hours of release, the app was downloaded more than 110,000 times.

The prospect of streaming video on the iPhone is an enticing one for adult producers and webmasters, but when it comes to the UStream application, they're out of luck. The app only streams programs from UStream's site, which prohibits any kind of adult entertainment.

But hope exists. UStream has also pledged to build an application for the iPhone that lets users record and broadcast video directly from their iPhones to the web. The application is still undergoing closed-door development and has no release date. Representatives for UStream haven't revealed whether users will be able to broadcast video to sites other than UStream.

In the meantime, adult producers have to rely on a pair of black-market apps that only work on "jailbroken" iPhones. They're called Qik and FlixWagon.com.

Producers enterprising enough to crack the iPhone's operating system, thereby circumventing Apple's proprietary safeguards, can broadcast to these sites provided they check out their terms of service. Qik prohibits "pornographic" and "obscene" material, while FlixWagon only ban "pornographic" material. Neither site offers definitions or standards for what constitutes "porn" or what is "obscene."
