Falcon/NakedSword Saddles Up for Western Fantasy 'Ashes Before Dawn'

Cowboys have long occupied a prominent place in erotic fantasy. The epic iconography of old frontier tales provides a charged setting for exploring the dynamics of power and desire.

Case in point: Falcon/NakedSword’s latest cinematic outing, “Ashes Before Dawn.” Directed by studio mainstay Alter Sin, the gritty frontier drama blends classic Western storytelling with the studio’s signature erotic intensity.

Sin has always been fascinated by the classic Westerns, the director tells XBIZ.

“There’s something almost poetic about them,” he muses. “The tension between good and evil, the silence charged with meaning, the sense of belonging to a land that shapes the people who inhabit it. I wanted to reclaim that emotional and almost mythical dimension of the genre.”

“Ashes Before Dawn” centers on a lone drifter, played by Sir Peter, who returns to his old town searching for answers about his father’s past. What begins as a quest for closure quickly escalates into a volatile confrontation with the men who now control the town. It’s a simmering power struggle fueled by resentment, attraction and long-buried secrets.

While the inevitable showdown may involve more than a few unconventional “shootouts,” beneath the playful nods to Western tropes lies a tale grounded in classic genre storytelling. After all, Sin explains, the Western is incredibly fertile narrative territory.

“It allows you to explore identity, power, desire, violence and redemption with almost archetypal clarity,” he says. “Once I stepped into that territory, the characters began to define themselves, as if they had been waiting there all along.”

For Sin, working within that genre was about tapping into a cultural mythos that continues to resonate with audiences.

“The Western is part of our collective imagination,” he affirms. “We’ve all grown up with its codes, its morality, its iconography. It felt like the right moment to revisit that legacy through my own perspective while bringing a contemporary sensibility to it.”

The Old West — in Spain

For a story rooted in classic tales of the American West, it might seem odd that the production was shot entirely in Spain with a predominantly European cast. Yet the decision is deeply rooted in film history.

While audiences often associate Westerns with the American frontier, many of the genre’s most iconic films were actually produced in Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. These so-called “spaghetti Westerns” — they were largely Italian productions — frequently relied on Spanish locations and crews.

“Ashes Before Dawn” leans into that legacy by entering the landscapes that helped define the genre’s visual identity.

“Filming in Spain was deeply symbolic,” Sin confirms. “I felt that, in a way, we were reconnecting with that heritage and reactivating it.”

Indeed, according to Sir Peter, much of the creative process was shaped by the location.

“We filmed in a fully built Western-style village, which instantly transported you into that world,” Sir Peter says. “Everything was already there — the buildings, the streets, the shops. Stepping onto the set really felt like being inside a classic Western film.”

Co-star John Jai agrees that the production environment helped the film achieve its cinematic ambitions — though he says this came with some drawbacks as well.

“The strong wind, heat and sand were definitely a challenge,” Jai admits. “My allergies were acting up so my eyes were bloodshot most of the time. But the crew was great. They found spots on set that were out of the sun and wind, which made filming much easier.”

For Sin, the Western setting offered a framework where narrative and aesthetics could carry as much weight as the explicit content.

“Inspiration often begins with a specific element that sparks the imagination,” Sin says. “I’m interested in exploring how the codes of classical cinema can engage in dialogue with adult film.”

For Sir Peter, the focus on the cinematography and the characters helped fashion a dimensional world for the viewer.

“Of course, everyone knows there will be sex in these films,” Sir Peter affirms. “That’s a given. But this was about building something beyond that.”

Becoming Cowboys

Of course, no Western would be complete without its central icon: the cowboy. Turning a cast of international stars into convincing frontier outlaws began with careful casting. Even beyond the leads, Sin wanted every character in the town to carry weight and authenticity.

“In a Western, the human landscape is just as important as the physical one,” Sin reflects. “Everyone contributes to the dramatic tension and ultimately to the story’s fate.”

In addition to Sir Peter and Jai, the diverse cast includes Paddy O’Brian, Magnus Loki, John Brachalli, Jolian, Serg Shepard and Caio Rodrigues. Sin says that he knew these performers could move beyond cliches and bring nuance to the powerful archetype of the cowboy.

“It’s an almost mythological figure, yet deeply human at the same time,” Sin notes. “The cowboy represents a masculinity forged through adversity, in silence and endurance. Cinematically, that energy is incredibly powerful. There’s also something about the aesthetic, the dust, the worn skin and the costume, that connects to a more raw, less artificial sensuality.”

For Sir Peter, a longtime fan of Westerns, the cowboy’s independence and rugged masculinity was part of the draw.

“The cowboy is the guy who rides in, saves the day and lives life on his own terms,” says Sir Peter. “My love for cowboys goes back to Paul Newman. For me, he was one of the greatest actors ever and one of the most handsome men of all time. He did many Western films. The one that stayed with me is ‘The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.’ He was a big inspiration.”

Jai was likewise enamored with the cowboy mystique.

“Cowboys have me in an absolute chokehold,” he confides. “I’ve always loved a hard-working man wearing denim jeans and a ripped-open plaid shirt showing that sweaty body from being on the ranch all day. The self-assured attitude they have, it’s giving ‘I know I’m hot and I will take full control of you with my belt if needed.’ Silent confidence has a way of controlling a room. I find that very sexy.”

When it came time to channel that cowboy energy on set, Jai also drew upon a familiar piece of queer cinema.

“‘Brokeback Mountain’ was a big influence,” he says. “Both Ennis and Jack resonate with me in strange ways. Being from a conservative town, I had to create a masculine facade to fit in. I would tell myself on set, ‘Act like you would when your brother would take you to football matches. Deepen the voice, make rigid body movements and show a hint of anger.’”

The sets and wardrobe also played no small part in helping the performers bring their characters to life.

Recalls Sir Peter, “Being surrounded by a Western town, wearing the jeans and especially the hat really helped.”

The boots, he found, turned out to be another matter.

“They looked amazing, but they were incredibly tight!” Sir Peter laughs. “My feet are a bit wide and those boots were very narrow. At one point, it took several people to pull them off while I was sitting on the floor completely naked.”

Jai experienced no such difficulties.

“As soon as I put on the boots, I felt like a new man,” he says. “Walking around the set, kicking the dust and feeling like you’re about to wrangle some men up definitely sets the tone.”

That level of realism occasionally complicated the more intimate scenes, however.

“It was pretty challenging with the sex, I can’t lie,” Jai admits. “Undoing the belts and shirts was a mission. I’m hoping the edit has done the concept justice.”

Behind the Saloon Doors

Even with all the research and preparation behind “Ashes Before Dawn,” the realities of shooting a Western-inspired adult feature sometimes created unexpected challenges. As Jai recalls, not every scene was easy to stage.

“Magnus and I were inside, filming our duo scene,” he says. “We had to balance on a tiny wooden stool while I was trying to ride him, but I had so much coconut oil and lube around my ass that it turned into a complete slip-and-slide. Magnus picked me up and sat down on another chair — but that one had an armrest that went right up his ass!”

Sir Peter especially relished shooting the film’s climactic showdown.

“One of my favorite moments was the final duel with Paddy O’Brian,” he says. “As someone who grew up with the fantasy of being a cowboy, filming that classic Western standoff felt incredibly satisfying. It was intense and rewarding for both of us, and that scene really captured the spirit of the whole project.”

Sir Peter says he felt extremely fortunate to be part of the production.

“It is not a genre you see very often in this industry, and the production quality was impressive,” he says. “The cinematography, the storytelling and the vision behind it were all very ambitious.”

Sin’s commitment to cinematic storytelling is evident throughout “Ashes Before Dawn.” From the carefully crafted costumes to the sweeping locations and grounded performances, the production carries the visual scale of a mainstream feature.

“Some people simply have a talent that goes beyond technique,” says Sir Peter. “You can feel it in the way they write and build a story. Knowing the role was written with me in mind made it even more special.”
