EDINBURGH, Scotland — Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey discusses chronic illness, loss, and recovery in her latest newsletter.
"After living for decades with multiple autoimmune diagnoses while maintaining a full professional workload, Bisbey spent much of her adult life pushing through illness and exhaustion rather than slowing down," said a rep. "The past two years brought that pattern into sharp focus, beginning with the loss of her mother in 2024, followed by major surgery in 2025 that forced her into extended rest and recovery. The experience marked a turning point, reframing self-care as something besides pure indulgence."
Dr. Bisbey stressed the importance of taking time off, as well as its benefits.
"Since the surgery, I have learned what rest really means," she said. "I have learned that sometimes self-care means doing nothing. For me, self-care is about consistently doing the things that are necessary for my physical, emotional, and spiritual health."
Dr. Bisbey is sharing her story now in the hope that others recognize the cost of constant overextension sooner rather than later.
