HBO Max Picks Up U.K. Porn-Set Drama 'Adult Material'

LOS ANGELES — HBO Max has acquired the British mainstream series “Adult Material,” set in the U.K.’s porn industry, for U.S. distribution.

The WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max acquired the four-part serial, which is currently airing in the U.K. on Channel 4, from Banijay Rights, whose Fifty Fathoms originally produced it, Variety reports.

The show, which was written by playwright Lucy Kirkwood and stars Hayley Squires, has been championed by liberal, often anti-porn publication The Guardian, but has been criticized by actual U.K. porn stars as uninformed and slanted.

The official logline for the debut episode is “porn star and mum-of-three Jolene Dollar is a poster girl for the industry. But her world is shaken by the arrival on set of new girl Amy and the return of a dark figure from her past.”

“I don’t understand why, here in the U.K., they insist in talking about porn and making shows like this by hiring people who don’t know anything about it,” Tina Kay — the 2020 XBIZ winner for Female Foreign Performer of the Year — told XBIZ only hours after reviewing the “Adult Material" premiere.

“Why are they making these fairy tales about our industry?” she added, calling the show’s depiction of a porn star’s life and her professional environment, “Complete bullshit, the whole thing.”

“Adult Material” will stream on HBO Max in December.
