GoDaddy Takes Over 850,000 RegisterFly Accounts

LOS ANGELES — Top domain registrar GoDaddy agreed Tuesday to take over and manage more than 850,000 addresses belonging to RegisterFly customers.

The move is just the latest in an unfolding drama for RegisterFly customers, who had faced the inability to renew domain names before they expired or to transfer them to another company.

While terms of the deal haven’t yet been disclosed, the agreement calls for GoDaddy to start running those names within one week.

Earlier this year, ICANN had decertified New Jersey-based RegisterFly and even sued the company after an internal ownership dispute led to a barrage of domain name holder complaints. It wasn't clear what effect the GoDaddy agreement would have on the lawsuit.

Founded in 1997 by Bob Parsons, who previously founded the software development company Parsons Technology Inc., GoDaddy Group Inc. has become the largest ICANN-accredited registrar and the only registrar to ever surpass Network Solutions in total domain names registered. It manages more than 20 million domain names under .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and others.
