Dell to Develop PCs for Wal-Mart, Sam's Club

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Dell has announced plans to sell its desktop PCs in more than 3,000 Wal-Mart locations across the U.S., with models also to be available in Sam's Club and Canadian Wal-Mart stores. This marks the first time Dell has marketed its products directly to consumers.

A Wal-Mart representative said Thursday that the computers will be in stores June 10, with two models priced below $700.

This follows a statement made last week by Dell CEO Michael Dell, revealing plans for the company to expand its retail base with new programs devoted to help resellers move its products, as well as a "major push" into the consumer retail market.

"I think you'll see Dell showing up in a lot more retail locations — not only here in the U.S. but also in major countries around the world over the next several quarters," Dell said.

Samir Bhavnani, research director at business consulting firm Current Analysis West, said that this is a good move on Dell's part to widen its customer market, making its products more accessible to more people.

"Finally Dell has addressed one of its main problems by giving customers a chance to touch and feel its products," Bhavnani said. "Dell's going to be touching a lot of people who weren't necessarily looking to buy a PC."
