France Unveils Multilayer Hi-Def Disc

PARIS — Two major French film distributors have signed a release deal with New Medium Enterprises, the company behind a new high-definition DVD called HD VMD, or High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc.

Metropolitan FilmExport, the French distributor for New Line Cinema and such top titles as "Lord of the Rings," and Seven 7 have agreed to release 20 titles each on the new format in September, with five more to follow monthly.

Like Warner Bros. True High Definition (THD) disc, the HD VMD is a true hi-def 1080p format and supports standard DVD and CD formats. HD VMD allows multi-layered storage of up to 48 GB, while THD allows 30 GB of space for the HD DVD side and 50 GB on the Blu-ray side.

An HD VMD player, packaged with five free HD VMD titles, will be released to French consumers for $406 in the near future.
