Chi Chi LaRue Named 'Powerful Gay' by Out Magazine

LOS ANGELES — Gay adult director Chi Chi LaRue is named No. 36 in Out Magazine's Power 50: The Most Powerful Gays in America.

LaRue told XBIZ she was "flabbergasted" and had no idea she had been recognized until a friend called her up and told her, "You're on the list with Rosie, Ellen and Bryan Singer!"

Out Magazine reported that it compiled the Power 50 based on each figure's political clout, pop-culture resonance, individual wealth and current personal profile.

"Whether they’re raking in millions, advancing the gay rights movement, entertaining us with snarky celebrity gossip, or selling us $2,000 cashmere sweaters, we’re confident that these VIPs have exerted considerable sway over how we think, look, and act," the list's accompanying article reads.

LaRue joins talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell, as well as alleged closeted gay news host Anderson Cooper.

"I'm even ahead of Jodi Foster," LaRue said.

LaRue said she saw Singer, the Hollywood director known for "Superman Returns" and "X-Men," at an L.A. club where LaRue is a DJ, and they congratulated each other. She said it's an honor to have been recognized among these figures.

"I mean, [Singer] is directing 'Superman' and 'X-Men,' and I'm doing 'Stick It in Me," La Rue said.

LaRue said it's "very cool" when people in the adult industry can cross the mainstream line.

"There not much of a line between the X-rated world and Hollywood," LaRue said. "The line is getting more and more blurred."

And while the proclaimed "Condom Nazi" hopes she's getting people off with her films, she's also sending a message about safe sex.

"For the gay community, for what I do, if I've influenced anyone enough to be on a list like this," La Rue said, "then I'm doing something great."
