Sunny Leone's 'Mastizaade' Releasing Amidst Censorship Controversy

Sunny Leone's 'Mastizaade' Releasing Amidst Censorship Controversy

MUMBAI — Controversial Bollywood sex comedies "Mastizaade" and "Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3" will release in late January with 'adult' certificates, after narrowly surviving the censorship gauntlet of India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Following the unveiling of the films' trailers, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India demanded that CBFC chair Pahlaj Nihalani explain why he approved the 'porn-coms.'

"We are in a Catch-22 situation," said Nihalani. "When we were strict with the vulgarity quotient, we were called prudes... so, we certified some films with scenes and dialogues that we would otherwise have never passed as they went against our guidelines.

"The steep level of vulgarity in the trailers was brought to our notice," he continued. "And we were shocked to see scenes and dialogues that we had censored, being used in the trailer. In fact, the makers of 'Angry Indian Goddesses' put together scenes deleted from the film and posted them online. Do they know it’s a culpable crime?"

Despite the ongoing censorship drama, "Kya Kool Hain Hum 3" will release Jan. 22, 2016, followed by the debut of "Mastizaade" on Jan. 29.

"Mastizaade" features former adult performer Sunny Leone as twins Laila and Lily, in a sex comedy directed by Milap Zaveri and produced by Pritish Nandy.

"This is the first time that I am playing twins — one is nerdy, while the other is sexy," Leone said. "I found that to be a great idea as India sees me more as Laila, but I’m actually nerdy — like Lily is — in real life."

The Indo-Canadian actress was Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003 and Maxim named her one of the top 12 porn stars in 2010, before she retired in 2013 to pursue mainstream opportunities.

"Kya Kool Hain Hum 3" is billed as India's first porn-com, starring Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani as adult film actors trying to hide the exact nature of their professions from the family of Kapoor's girlfriend.
