Dutch Artist Creates Hoodies from Sex Dolls

UTRECHT, Holland — Dutch artist and designer Sander Reijgers uses not-so-sexy recycled sex dolls to create striking hoodies, tracksuits and coats.

Although the 31 year old from Utrecht repurposes “sensitive” areas, like the breasts, vagina, anus and head, the pieces don’t come off as particularly crass or even overtly anatomical. And, according to the artist, that’s the point.

“I remove the sexual function of the dolls by turning them into a jacket or a bag,” Reijgers said of his designs. “In this way, the doll can 'feel' by performing a normal day-to-day task, rather than through sex. In daily life, we are bombarded through the media and advertising with images of especially female nudity to stimulate consumerism.

“I comment on this situation through my art, but with humor and without being too moralistic about it…. People aren't afraid to wear my jackets because my work isn't coarse or vulgar. My work isn't about shocking people or about sex for the sake of sex. To me, sex is a means to make aesthetic, funny and multi-layered pieces.”

In addition to clothing, Reijgers has also produced nonwearble art pieces from blowup dolls, including “Stigmata,” two plastic dolls hands with "bleeding" plastic vaginas and the self-explanatory “Titball.”
