Kelly Shibari Featured in 2014 'Adipositivity' Calendar

LOS ANGELES — BBW star Kelly Shibari, announced today that she has been selected for April and December in the 2014 Adipositivity Calendar.

“I’m so thrilled to have been chosen for not just one, but two months,” Shibari said. “The Adipositivity Project is something I’ve wanted to be a part of for a long time, and my trip to New York earlier this year finally made that possible. Thank you, Substantia, for allowing me to pose for you, and selecting me for your Calendar; I’m grinning from ear to ear."

Shibari noted that founder and photographer Substantia Jones has photographed hundreds of plus size people, mostly women and mostly nude, for her Adipositivity Project. The hope of the ongoing Project is to demystify the fat body and promote enlightened discussion of fat politics and social justice.

“The Adipositivity Project is a body-love photo-activism campaign which shows what the larger end of natural human variation really looks like,” Jones said. “It’s not the lumbering, headless fat folks in grease-stained T-shirts television news broadcasts would have you believe.”

Shibari said projects such as the Adipositivity Project are part of the movement to get people to not only accept themselves, but a message to the world that people don’t have to conform to a media-dictated size to be considered sexy.

“I preach body autonomy and freedom from body policing and size-ist judgement,” added Jones. “The Adipositivity Project is part fat, part feminism, and part ‘Fuck You’. Kelly's a natural in front of the camera, and was a pleasure to work with. She has a way of being noble, playful, and smoldering, all at once. Exactly what I wanted to convey in the calendar. After the shoot, we walked to a nearby restaurant and solved 70 percent of the world's problems over lunch. Kelly's got a fun spirit and a fierce mind for business. And boy, can she rock some knee socks.”
