‘Family’ Groups Want to Pow-wow With Bush About Porn

WASHINGTON — Patrick Trueman of the Family Research Council has sent a letter to President Bush requesting a meeting about the distribution of what the letter calls “illegal pornography.”

Trueman said the letter speaks on behalf of a number of organizations, including the FRC and the Alliance Defense Fund, and requests that the administration beef up efforts to prosecute so-called obscene material.

“That gives wind to the sails of the prosecutors, and it sends a strong message to those that are violating federal law that the government is going to get you,” Trueman wrote.

Trueman also quotes others, such as Pastor Rod Parsley of World Harvest Church in Ohio, who said, “I’ve seen families absolutely destroyed by the blight of pornography. Pornography does not lead anyone to anything good, it becomes a financial drain on the family like any addiction does, and often leads to violence against women.”

Trueman, who testified before Congressin May during a hearing on obscenity prosecution, did not return a phone call from XBIZ.

One of the groups he claims to speak for, Alliance Defense Fund, states on its website that “God has granted us an amazing opportunity to serve Him, as we fight to preserve through our legal system the principles upon which our country was founded. Only by God's grace and strength can we accomplish these critical tasks.”

High among those critical tasks, according to the site, is fighting pornography, stating, “These [adult entertainment] businesses often result in increased crime, as well as spiritual entrapment for those who are caught in pornography’s lure, or who are physically exploited for material gain,” according to the site.

The group also claims to have won several adult entertainment-related cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, but offers no specific examples.

The ADF also declined to return a phone call from XBIZ.
