Mobile Growth Climbing, New Study Says

SAN MATEO, Calif. — U.S. smartphone adoption grew 30 percent in 2012, with more than 50 million owners now having access to tablets, according to market research firm BrightEdge.

Mobile Internet usage now accounts for one out of every three digital media consumption minutes, the firm said in its first BrightEdge Mobile Share Report.

"We tracked the business impact of mobile usage across 6,000 brand customers," the company said. "As part of this process we analyzed the web traffic for more than 5 billion web pages to quantify how the mobile channel (smartphone and tablet) compares with the desktop channel with a key focus on how these channels drive conversions."

BrightEdge's full Mobile Share Report highlights include an analysis of traffic and conversions across mobile devices and desktops; best practices and key opportunities to optimize web properties for mobile; insight into which vertical markets have had significant growth in mobile traffic; and drivers for growth in conversions for mobile devices vs. desktop.
