Villaraigosa Signs Amended Porn-Condom Law

LOS ANGELES — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed the amended Safer Sex Act on June 25, adding another chapter to the city’s porn-condom saga that began over three years ago and predates Measure B.

According to the City Council notes, the law will become effective Aug. 6.

Villaraigosa signed the original measure in January 2012, more than a year after it moved along the legislative track from conception to a fully fledged ordinance.

Diane Duke, chief executive officer of the FSC, hasn’t conceded a victory to the measure’s supporters quite yet.

“The issue currently is being litigated and the results of the litigation will determine the outcome for both city and county,” she told XBIZ, adding, “The city essentially handed the issue over to the county, which is ironic since AHF has now filed a petition to create a L.A. City Health Department.”

The petition Duke is referencing has already garnered enough signatures to qualify for next year’s ballot or outright adoption by City Council.

Ged Kenslea, the AHF senior director of communications, previously told XBIZ that the Safer Sex Act will need to be once again amended should the city health department come to fruition.

Today is Mayor Villaraigosa’s last day in office. On July 1, Eric Garcetti will continue as the new mayor of L.A.
