Larry Elder Skeptical of AHF’s Porn-Condom Initiatives

LOS ANGELES -- Larry Elder, the KABC radio personality whose political views are philosophically libertarian, was skeptical of AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein’s stance Wednesday in a radio interview over his group’s drive to make condoms mandatory in porn productions.

In the interview, Elder -- a supporter of free trade, school choice, same-sex marriage, abortion rights and drug legalization -- took issue with Weinstein over his group's crusade in a phone interview, honing in on performers’ personal choice when it comes to condoms and porn.

Weinstein has reiterated time and time again that he’s looking out for adult performers with laws like the voter-passed Measure B in Los Angeles County and similar state legislation being weighed in Sacramento, Calif., saying that they don’t have a choice in the workplace.

“You keep saying that the performers don’t have a choice, but of course they do,” Elder said. “They don’t have to get into this industry whatsoever.”

Elder also challenged Weinstein’s stance that the AHF’s focus on mandatory condoms in the  porn biz is the best way to educate the general population how they should have sex. Why not focus on sex in mainstream movies? Elder asked.

“I would suspect more young people are exposed to regular movies, regular TV series and regular soaps where people hop in bed all the time without any discussion whatsoever about a condom,” Elder said. “It seems to me that if I am trying to change how the way we perceive how people are engaging in sex I would start there.”

In another query in the 11-minute interview, Elder asked Weinstein whether he was concerned about 10,000 local Porn Valley jobs at stake because of Measure B’s effect.

In his response, Weinstein said AHF will continue with the porn-condom issue well past California.

“We are going to go anywhere the industry goes in the U.S.,” Weinstein said. “I don’t accept the premise that they are going to be able run somewhere else. We will be following them.”
