Apple Rolls Out New 'Retina' MacBook Pro

SAN FRANCISCO — A new more powerful MacBook Pro with a Retina screen is the standout at today's Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Phil Schiller, Apple's worldwide marketing chief, showed off the new MacBook Pro with the Retina display.    The display comes in at 2,880-by-1,800 and 220ppi, which Schiller said makes it the world's highest-resolution notebook.

Schiller described it as a “breakthrough in engineering,” and the computer, appearing thinner than his finger, is 4 1/2 lbs and 0.71-inches thick. "This thing is super thin," he said.

The MacBook Pro boasts seven hours of battery time, with 30 days of standby time, and is so fast it can run nine streams of video simultaneously using Final Cut Pro. The device includes the new Intel processor, Ivy Bridge and has up to 512 GB of flash storage.

The Mac OS has been updated for the new MacBook Pro display, including Safari, Mail, iMovie, iPhoto, and Final Cut Pro.

Apple has released specs of the 13- and 15-inch models:

  • The 15-inch MacBook Pro is available with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB of memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, and 500GB hard drive starting at $1,799; and with a 2.6 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, and 750GB hard drive starting at $2,199.
