Egypt Moves to Ban Internet Porn

CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt’s government is moving to ban all Internet porn.

According to the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Mohamed Salem, a new committee will be formed to discuss the technical methods on how to handcuff millions of adult sites.

Last month, a prime minister of Egypt’s ultra-conservative al-Nour Salafist religious People’s Assembly Transportation and Telecommunications Committee, pushed the country's parliament for an all out ban on porn.

Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulation Authority will reportedly create the new commitee that will be charged with drafting the anti-porn law.

“Parliament will be represented in the committee. The issue is becoming persistent and worrying to families,” Salem said at a briefing.

The Minister revealed that some software companies are ready with filtering software that’s currently in use to block sites for underage viewers.

Salem said that the ministry would have a representative on the constituent assembly that will draft the new constitutional measure to ensure that it caters to the needs of the sector.

Legislation to punish Internet companies that allow access to porn sites is also being called for by the ban’s proponents.
