U.K. Mobile Regulator Wants BlackBerry to Block Porn

LONDON — Porn on British BlackBerry smartphones is getting manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) in hot water.

The British communications regulator Ofcom, has summoned the company’s brass to a mobile porn summit over concerns that hardcore content can be accessed by underage users.

According to reports, because BlackBerry’s data flows directly through its own operating system and servers, it stymies local mobile operators from applying filtering software.

An Ofcom spokesman told the Telegraph, "It was brought to our attention that there is a problem. It is to do with the way the operating system works. We are very concerned and want to get this resolved as quickly as possible."

Ofcom maintained that it’s easier for mobile operators to install filters on smartphones like iPhone but has been having problems with the BlackBerry device.

RIM has supplied its own filtering solution, but it has only worked with T-Mobile’s network.

The company also took a hit earlier this year when its Messenger service was blamed for being instrumental in fueling the Londion riots.

RIM will be joined at the summit by the U.K.'s leading mobile networks.
