Oprah Examines Porn Addiction

CHICAGO — The Nov. 30 episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is scheduled to examine the width, breadth and girth of America’s so-called “porn addiction,” which the show’s promoters describe as “the biggest addiction in this country.”

Guests will include Kirk Franklin, a Grammy-winning gospel singer who reportedly tells Winfrey that he has been hiding an “X-rated secret” for years, during which he “hid a life of hypocrisy from his family, friends and fans.”

On the show, Franklin and his wife Tammy will discuss his long battle with — and eventual victory over — pornography.

During the show, Winfrey also will interview married couple “Josh and Rebecca,” both wrestling with the fact that Josh reportedly looks at porn online for more than eight hours every day.

“It’s a big part of my day,” Josh says in a promo for the show.

Throughout the show, self-proclaimed “porn addiction expert” Robert Weiss will help moderate discussion and answer questions. Weiss, director of the Sexual Recovery Institute, believes that the Internet is to blame for converting normal sexual behavior into a state of addiction, largely because of the web's “accessibility, anonymity and affordability.”

Earlier this month, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., made similar claims. The intensely religious Brownback, who has already publicized his bid for the 2008 Republican nomination for president, organized a Nov. 11 hearing of the Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Right Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the topic, “Why the Government Should Care About Pornography: The State Interest in Protecting Children and Families.”

Almost exactly one year ago the same subcommittee, also lead by Brownback, held a hearing on “Pornography Addiction,” during which Brownback called on members to endorse a public health campaign warning that the “addiction” is destroying families and harming children.

“Addicted to Porn” is scheduled to air at 3 p.m. PST.
