ASACP Attends State of the Net and Web Safety Conferences in D.C.

LOS ANGELES — ASACP Technology and Forensic Research Director Tim Henning represented the organization last week in Washington, D.C., participating in the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) Keeping Kids Safe in a Mobile Environment Conference and the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee State of the Mobile Net Conference.

The April 22 FOSI Keeping Kids Safe in a Mobile Environment Conference covered topics including investigating challenges to a safe online experience that are unique to wireless devices, how kids are using wireless devices and what more can be done to keep them safe, and a discussion of the emerging areas of concerns. Keynote speakers included representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association and the Attorney General of Maryland.

On April 23, the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee State of the Mobile Net Conference took place. Topics at the conference focused on what the mobile net is, how it operates, trends, privacy, and what policy framework will further enable innovation on the mobile net. Speakers included representatives from the Federal Communications Commission; the U.S. Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation; the Center for Democracy and Technology; and also representatives from tech and hardware companies including IBM, Yahoo, T-Mobile, Nokia and Google.

“Both conferences were very valuable for ASACP as I was able to discuss the RTA — Restricted To Adults website label with many participants and demonstrate how the industry is committed to the protection of children while online." Henning said. "I was also able to learn about, in great detail, the issues that are of most concern to law enforcement, providers and policy makers when it comes to the protection of children in the mobile environment."

Henning returns to Washington in June to participate in the semi-annual meeting of the Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography, where he is a member of the coalition’s Analytics Working Group and Technology Challenges Working Group.

"It is important that Tim attends these meetings in order for ASACP to keep current on what is going on with mobile content in D.C.," ASACP CEO Joan Irvine told XBIZ. "However it is just as vital that ASACP keeps its presence known with those most influential in possibly regulating content so that they are aware of ASACP and the adult industry’s efforts to protect children."

Founded in 1996, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating child pornography from the Internet. ASACP also works to help parents prevent children from viewing age-inappropriate material online.
