Czech Republic Sees Porn Boom

PRAGUE — Erotica Sex 2005 came to a close last week, marking the 11th year in a row that the annual trade show has brought the adult community from all over Europe into Prague, and helping turn the Czech Republic into Europe’s little darling when it comes to adult film production.

Hungary, a locale long considered the biggest bang for an adult filmmaker’s buck in Europe, may lose the blue ribbon soon, as many at the show praised the Republic’s low cost of shooting, its relaxed pornography legislation, and its women, often considered to the most beautiful in the world.

“Prague in the past four years has become the biggest city for the adult industry in the whole of Europe in terms of making movies,” director Oldřich Widman told the Prague Post during the show. “If you look in a store anywhere in Europe and check any DVD, you always find one Czech or Slovak girl in it.”

Widman, owner of Czech adult film company Dream Entertainment, said his country’s natural talent is the biggest attraction for foreign adult film producers.

“American girls are pretty fake, with silicone boobs and fake lips,” he said. “What sells the most at the moment is the natural stuff — good-looking girls, no silicone — and the Czech Republic has a big supply of [that].”

Jean Francois, a sales and marketing representative for a French adult film company, agreed with Widman’s assessment. Francois, who works for Petite Pictures in Paris, told XBiz via email that his company used to shoot almost exclusively in Hungary.

“That is changing though,” he wrote. “Prague is just starting to make more sense in terms of where the money is going.”

Francois said the most expensive adult film he had ever heard anyone make in Prague cost less than $40,000.

Industry figures out of the city estimate that video and DVD sales are the country’s largest adult export, but a number of popular Internet sites based in Prague have also begun to thrive, including Eromaxx.net, which runs 12 sites that show streaming video of group sex scenes filmed in Prague.

Representatives at Erotica 2005 reported roughly 15,000 visitors came to this year’s show, which ran from Sept. 29 – Oct. 2
