Summer Girls App Presses Adult Boundaries on iPhone

CUPERTINO, Calif. — The struggle to break Apple's adult barrier continues. Steve Cannon should know.

The longtime software developer recently got Apple to approve a spicy app called Summer Girls. He told XBIZ that he's been developing software in some form or another since getting into Atari games back in the '80s.

He's also worked in the adult industry, having produced fetish-themed titles for years. Cannon also used to own the domain Fetish.com, which he maintained for years to sell his work.

But working with Apple turned out to be a new challenge in restraint. Apple doesn't allow any adult-themed apps into its store, and has even cracked down on some borderline apps for their naughtiness.

One app called Wobble simply let users load an image and add "wobble" points to it. The Wobble developers encourage users to load images of busty women into their app, but Apple put the kibosh on even hinting at the possibility for adult fun on an app.

Cannon's app appears to be saucier than that, although he still chose not to show any naked women. Summer Girls offers a selection of drawings of curvy women. Users can then shake their iPhone to remove some of their clothes.

Cannon told XBIZ that he has no plans to develop any apps for the iPhone black market.

"I understand where they are coming from as they are a public company," he said. "I'm willing to abide by whatever rules they have. I just wish those rules were spelled out nice and clear up front before I started spending money with artists."

As for the future, Cannon said he has three more apps in development, two of which aren't even that sexy.

"I have several more great ideas that are in the works right now, and one of them is a sexy app," he said. "[It] should be just fine with Apple censors as I have a good idea now what is allowed and what isn't."
