Subversion
It’s amazing to see how legendary director Jean-Daniel Cadinot was so successful in completely different eras. He adapted, yet never lost sight of his artistry and emphasis on story. He passed away far too soon, at the age of 64 in 2008. At the time, “Subversion” was one of two unfinished, unreleased films. French Art now gives us this modern masterpiece, which shows so much of what made the director so great — and serves as a sad bookmark to a career that had so much more to show us. The director was a true visionary, and his signature style is unmistakable.

This 10-scene effort (!) running 159 minutes (!!) isn’t afraid of a script or story. This one revolves around the plight of Giacomo Ferreri, who plays a muscular laborer living in a shack in the French countryside. He faces constant discrimination for his immigrant status — and the perception that he’s a trouble-making whore. His exploits (and those of his friends) fill out the film, which makes a few statements in between its stellar sex. Yes, porn can be educational! It can also be beautiful, as evidenced by the director’s unique use of angles, lighting, colors and mirrors to craft unforgettable images. If that hasn’t convinced you, note that all of Ferreri’s multiple squirts are copious gushers. Need we say more?

Synopsis:

A provincial town is the stage for this story where Giacomo, a young and beautiful immigrant tries to integrate, accepting all the shit jobs the French refuse to do. He gets a little money on the side at the end of the month by exchanging his charms to one of his sex-mad bosses, the son of the local notary, even the notary himself, against a menu of presents that recompense the mediocrity of his day-to-day existence and brighten up the miserable chalet where he lives, deep in the woods. His prowess for sex in all directions irritates the local judo-christians and their moralising lot. The offerings build up, his life gets better and a meeting with a fashion photographer suddenly allows him to afford a future with more promising horizons. This film is a social commentary without concession where 11 actors uncover their charms and realise their maddest fantasies in 11 particularly subversive scenes.
