Eco-Friendly Tips for Content Creation

Eco-Friendly Tips for Content Creation

By now, we’re all familiar with being more environmentally conscious as consumers. But did you know that you can also be a conscious creator? With more and more consumers trying to reduce their environmental footprint, why not apply that to your own business model and make it part of your appeal?

It may seem hard to think about adding this additional layer to your process while trying to grow your profits, especially since we often think of sustainability as costing more. Products that promote sustainability sometimes come with a markup, and looking for gently-used items vs. brand-new can take up valuable time. But thanks to the internet, sustainable choices are a lot more accessible now than even five years ago. So in the long run, making some minor changes can actually help your profit margin grow while also making a positive impact on the environment.

Working from home gives you more control over how much power you use on a daily basis.

SECONDHAND GADGETS

Everyone wants the shiniest, newest gadgets. Cars are a great example; who doesn’t want a brand new set of wheels? It can be tempting to buy the newest cameras and iPhones to get the best look. But the truth is, the camera doesn’t make as big of an impact as the person working it. If you need to upgrade your equipment, look for secondhand options. Not only is it already “broken in” but you’ll also have an easier time looking up information for any learning curves you may have. This is also a great way to try out newer equipment without leaving a large dent in your bank account. Look into renting the equipment for a few days instead of investing a large amount of money upfront. Rental equipment comes pre-checked, plus you can test out various models to figure out what works best for you. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to keep it!

DOES THIS DRESS MAKE ME LOOK SUSTAINABLE?

Fast fashion has boomed with the influencer crowd, and the appeal is clear. Inexpensive clothing that’s keeping up with trends is an easy purchase. But the environmental and human impact has been well documented as being problematic. The clothing does not last long and isn’t meant to be worn repeatedly for years. Buying quality clothing that looks good and will last longer will get you more return on your investment.

Seek out affordable brands and look at secondhand clothing stores and websites for outfits you can use in multiple shoots with an easy restyle. Think about the makeup products that you use too; sustainably made products can often be healthier for your skin as well as kinder to the environment.

YOU HAVE THE POWER

Electric bills are no joke! Working from home gives you more control over how much power you use on a daily basis. You can reduce your usage by planning to shoot all of your content one day a week. Not only will this help you be more efficient with your time, but it will also be energy-efficient. Make sure you’re using bulbs that are energy-efficient as well. If your bulbs give off too much heat, chances are you’ll be running AC as well. Do you have all of your hair tools plugged in while you’re shooting? Pull that plug! Take a look around for energy vampires and you’ll start to see a difference in your power bill in no time.

SPEAKING OF POWER

If you’re able to, utilize natural light whenever you can! Not only is natural light free, it’s flattering to most skin tones and can give your content a natural glow that’s warmer than set lights. Filming outdoors is also a good way to keep your content fresh, changing with the seasons and saving on electricity. Even if it’s not your NSFW content, a little bit of outdoor SFW content is always great for sprinkling into your feeds.

RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE (YOUR CONTENT)

I will repeat this every day to anyone who will listen: recycle your content. There’s nothing wrong with reposting something you shot a year ago and saving yourself time and energy. The fan turnover on platforms is high, so someone may not have seen your Fourth of July 2021 scene!

It’s 2022 and sustainability isn’t just a trend that’s going to go away. I encourage you to embrace it and educate your fellow content creators on the ways they can shrink their footprints as well. Don’t just trade content, trade clothing or equipment with each other instead of adding it to a landfill. Donate it to new content creators or sell it to someone looking to add to their collection. Embrace your resourcefulness and use it as a marketing tool in your favor. You never know if one of your fans might have a fetish for environmental awareness!
