Independent Podcast Directory Offers Outlet for Adult

SAN FRANCISCO — Though it was launched in 2005, the podcasting directory Odeo.com recently underwent a revamp and added video support.

The site also offers adult promoters and producers another way to reach mainstream audiences — and mainstream traffic — with an adult podcast or video blog.

The site's terms of service don't prohibit adult content, instead warning surfers that they may encounter objectionable material. The terms of service also specifically say that users may encounter "adult content" that may be unsuitable for younger viewers.

This policy puts Odeo in line with Apple's podcast directory. Available only through Apple's gateway application, iTunes, the Apple podcast directory offers adult-themed content with the caveat that people might not like everything they find.

Brief searches for "sex" and "porn" on Odeo turned up few relevant results, except for one antiporn podcast. As of now, Odeo has no section dedicated to adult entertainment.

The site's selection of content is vast, with millions of audio and video podcasts across more than 500,000 channels. Odeo also offers social networking features similar to YouTube, with user profiles, playlists and favorites, and, like YouTube, users can share podcasts over email or by embedding episodes onto web pages.

Many adult performers maintain blogs and video diaries, including Violet Blue, whose podcast "Open Source Sex" is available through Apple's podcast directory. Adult performer Nikki Benz also keeps a video blog through her YouTube profile.

“I wanted to create some sort of video diary of my daily life,” Benz said. “There are a ton of videos I have yet to upload and I love hearing from fans and reading their comments.”

Odeo's current Alexa rank is 13,425. There is no Alexa rank for Apple's podcast store, because it is only offered through iTunes.
