Penthouse Boutique Adds DVD Preview Station

MILFORD, Conn. — Shoppers at the Penthouse Boutique, owned by Smash Pictures parent Horizon Media, can now preview adult DVDs before making a purchase, thanks to the addition of new viewing stations from Four Winds Interactive.

The Interactive Media Stations work much like the listening stations that have become commonplace at major music retail chains such as Tower Records and Virgin Megastores.

The video terminals are designed to help traditional retailers overcome increased competition from online stores and to help adult movie studios capture more impulse sales from casual browsers.

Customers can watch movie trailers on a 15-inch video screen simply by scanning the barcode from the box cover. Content is uploaded via the Internet from FWi’s Denver, Colo., headquarters.

“Elite adult film labels now have an easy way to differentiate themselves from the endless parade of box covers that crowd shelves at retailers,” said FWi President David Levin. “FWi is building a nationwide promotion network that movie labels can utilize to more effectively launch new titles, making sure they get noticed at the point of decision.”

Smash Pictures is an early adopter of the technology, so far making trailers for around 20 of its titles available for download on the Interactive Media Stations.

“We have had great success with the Smash Pictures website, where we offer a photo gallery and movie trailer with all new releases,” Stuart Wall, Smash Pictures vice president, said. “This has really helped us increase our sales, and this new situation with Four Winds Interactive will allow us to connect even better with our customers who like to purchase DVDs in stores.”

Levin said FWi plans are in the works to add titles from other adult movie producers and install the stations at retail stores nationwide. Once installed, the stations can be customized to reflect customer preferences and take advantage of in-store sales and promotions.
