LOS ANGELES — Nina Nova offers a candid look at the adult industry, the culture of sex, and the politics of pleasure in an episode of the podcast “Humanizing SEX,” hosted by sex therapist Yub Kim.
The hour-long discussion sees Nova charting her path from sexual health and reproductive rights policy and organizing work into adult entertainment, and how working in the industry has complicated and reshaped her previous ideas about sexuality, empowerment, and liberation.
“I’ve always identified with the pursuit of pleasure and the idea that pleasure is power,” Nova says in the episode. “But now I get to do it a little bit differently. What we allow in porn, what we normalize in the industry of porn, impacts our entire society. It creates a societal undertone of what is allowed and what is permissible.”
Nova also discusses her upcoming project “The Pleasure Paradox,” which “will explore sexuality, pleasure, power, relationships, embodiment, and the cultural contradictions surrounding sex,” according to a rep. Nova said the project represents an opportunity to bring together the different parts of her professional life: sexual health advocacy, adult entertainment, media literacy, and her experience navigating the adult industry.
“I want to start talking about pleasure as power and pleasure as political and pleasure without permission,” she said. “I want to start talking about how we reclaim our sexual identities and our sexual bodies and lives.”
The episode can be heard on Apple and Spotify.
