Charlotte Sins on Turning Obedience Into Strategy

Charlotte Sins on Turning Obedience Into Strategy

‘My freckles are probably my most commented-on feature.”

That’s not necessarily the sort of thing you expect to hear from a porn star — but then, Charlotte Sins has never been one to fit neatly into any preconceived category, or worry overmuch about expectations.

“I don’t like being told what to do,” she states simply. “That’s probably why I ended up in this industry. If someone’s trying to convince me or push me into thinking or agreeing with something, I kind of inherently push back. I guess I’m kind of a hipster in the sense that I refuse to just get on board.”

It’s something she’s had to learn about herself over time.

“I wanted to go to college and do the things you’re ‘supposed’ to do,” she recalls. “And I tried that. I went to college and got jobs — and I was just incredibly unhappy.”

In a possibly related story, Sins thinks she likely has “a touch of ADHD,” which may also explain her habit of reading multiple books at once.

“Some people think it’s psychotic,” she laughs. “But I can’t just read one book at a time. I guess I read books the way people watch TV. Sometimes I want to watch something funny, sometimes I want to learn something and sometimes I just want to mindlessly read something that takes no effort. I have a few books in my rotation right now.”

On the other hand, she may just be quirky. Sins recently visited Amsterdam and Prague, and says she had a great time in both cities — but it wasn’t the usual cultural and historical attractions that drew her attention.

“I’m very into ossuaries and catacombs,” she confides. “Creepy things like that.”

Topping From the Bottom

“When I started doing porn, I was doing a lot of teen stuff, which is more submissive,” she explains. “But doing sex work for this long, I’ve realized I’m a more dominant person.”

That happened to match up with her offscreen self, Sins confides.

“I’m a pretty ‘type A,’ controlling kind of person in my day-to-day life,” she laughs. “At home, I’m all about structure and routine and lists — probably to an annoying degree, for my partner!”

Unsurprisingly, Sins especially enjoys doing femdom work.

“I’m not a full-fledged femdom dominatrix,” she notes. “I wouldn’t say that’s my brand. But I love my femdom boys and my cucks and my little foot bitches so much. I think that’s kind of where I thrive and get into a flow state sometimes. When I’m dominating or sexting guys in a more femdom way, I find myself really lighting up.”

The same goes for her sex scenes. Sins says she enjoys “topping from the bottom.”

“Maybe the guy is fucking the shit out of me, but I’m fucking him hard right back,” Sins declares. “That’s a lot more ‘me,’ because I’m not a natural submissive. In some of my scenes, I might look submissive to some people, but I don’t see myself as submissive at all — even when I’m getting fucked really hard like a rag doll in a gangbang.

“I like being a woman who demands to get fucked hard and doesn’t just passively take it,” she says. “So I’m always sure to show my enthusiasm for it and how much pervy fun I’m having. I like to call myself a sick, twisted slut because I can just be an absolute pervert when I get into certain scenes. I hope my fans recognize in my performance that I genuinely really like doing porn, because I’m a very sexual person.

“I want people who watch my porn to simultaneously be a little intimidated by me, and also very horny and turned on,” Sins adds.

‘Okay, I’m in porn now.’

Sins first dipped her toes into the adult pond while attending college in Utah, selling her panties and other worn items for a little extra money. Eventually, fans began requesting photos and videos, so she moved to Las Vegas and went the camming route full-time, producing her own content for MyFreeCams during the site’s heyday.

“It’s kind of the classic camgirl-to-porn-star pipeline kind of thing,” she jokes.

After camming for a little more than a year, Sins began doing nonpenetrative content scenes with other creators. After that, it wasn’t long before an agent reached out. Sins signed her first contract on her birthday in 2019, which she also counts as her “porniversary.”

“Before then, I wasn’t doing it in a really committed way,” she says. “I was just trying it out. But signing that first contract was like, ‘Okay, I’m in porn now.’”

Within two years, Sins had signed with Spiegler Girls, where she remains repped today.

She describes her career since then as “a bit of a slow burn.”

“Some people get into this business, and they have a viral moment or they do a project that launches them to the top, so they have a really pinpointable breakout moment,” she says. “I don’t have that — but I have a lot of really cool things that I’ve worked on and experienced.”

Slow and steady, Sins’ trajectory suggests, does indeed win the race. She certainly has no trouble keeping busy. She mentions Ricky Greenwood’s feature “Wanted” as among her favorite recent projects.

Sins also enthuses about recently working with Inka Winter of ForPlay Films for the first time.

“She’s someone whose work I have really admired for a long time, so I reached out to her and found we shared a similar vision,” Sins says. “I pitched a voyeurism thing to her because that’s the kind of subject I want to explore more in my content, and she asked how we could do it with a female empowerment spin, as she’s very much into feminist porn.”

Sins and Winter came up with a female-driven narrative together, and Winter’s writers turned in a really cool script based on their idea.

“It’s called ‘Private Eye,’ and it’s this kind of neo-noir project where the first part of the film is in black and white,” Sins explains. “The first sex scene, with Cody Steele, is very sensual and intimate, even though he’s a total stranger to me in the film. Then in the second scene, I get to have sex with Tommy Pistol, and he’s just an absolute freak. So, that scene is hardcore, and that title was self-produced, though Inka and I split that content because it was a collaboration with her team.”

Opportunity Bangs

Sins also recently shot her first gangbang scene, for a new Gamma banner that has yet to be announced.

“That was a big thing for me,” she says. “I was lucky enough to have Casey Calvert direct it, which was incredible because she’s like, the gangbang queen!”

The project is “about way more than just sex,” Sins adds.

“It was a documentary-style thing,” she elaborates. “So we did a full day of filming at my house exploring who I am, how I prepare, how I got here and who I am offscreen. You get to see my house and my animals, and get an in-depth look at me, so it was really fun to show people a little bit more of my home life and who I am off-camera.”

Sins says she handpicked all the male talent for the scene, and felt supported by the “amazing” crew.

“I feel very grateful for the way it happened, and I really wouldn’t have done it any differently,” she avows. “I’ve been waiting for this type of opportunity, where it just felt right. I’ve gotten a couple of offers for gangbangs, but in my mind, if it’s not ‘Fuck yes!’ then it’s a no. Especially when it comes to something as extreme as a gangbang. I wanted to really enjoy myself and not just do it for a paycheck. So it was an incredible opportunity to get to do it for Casey.”

First and Foremost

Sins has also self-produced a number of projects for her OnlyFans, which allows her to put her own creative spin on things.

“It can be expensive, and it doesn’t always pay off as well as other stuff, but it allows me to scratch my creative itch and give myself the opportunities that I wish other people would give me,” Sins explains. “It’s absolutely not a moneymaker, but it’s fun and I enjoy it.”

Sins feels that her hyper-organized personality would make her a good director, something she hopes to explore more one day.

“Directing is something I would at least like to try,” she reflects. “I do think I have the personality for it, and I’d enjoy it because I like making things happen. So I’m sure it will be on the table down the line. However, at the end of the day, I’m first and foremost a porn star, through and through. I would much rather be on set shooting porn every day of the week than producing my own things, to be honest.”

Besides creative satisfaction, Sins says, she has also found it rewarding to form friendships within the industry and become part of the adult community.

“It may sound cheesy, but that’s what I really love,” she says. “I’ve been doing this for a long time now, and having close relationships with my directors and my co-performers has been the thing that I’m happiest with. I was on one of Mike Quasar’s sets yesterday with my really good friend, Katrina Cole, and it was cool to be able to shoot the shit with Quasar and talk about memories that we have together from five or six years ago.”

Furry Friends, Healthy Habits

Some of Sins’ most important relationships, however, are not with industry colleagues — or even with humans. She has always been passionate about animals, and volunteers at a farm sanctuary once a month. She has also been trying to spend more time volunteering at a local shelter that cares for bunnies.

Sins and her partner, who isn’t in the business, share a Great Pyrenees dog named Moose. Their other beloved Great Pyrenees, Molly, passed away in April. Molly was nine, a respectable age for a dog of her size.

“As it was happening, I was so grateful for my job, because I was able to give her the care that she needed when it got very expensive,” Sins shares. “I felt immense gratitude for where I’m at in life. I was like, ‘Thank God I suck dick for a living!’ because I don’t know how I would’ve been able to manage it all otherwise, especially given the time off that’s required to care for a sick animal.

“A lot of people don’t have the luxury of taking a week off work, so I feel very grateful to have had the time with her before she passed away,” Sins adds. “So we have Moose now, and he’s lovely. And I recently adopted a 15-year-old toothless Maltese named Opie! He’s so much fun.”

Sins walks the dogs for at least two miles every morning.

“I’ve found that waking up early and walking every morning has been really good for my mental and physical health,” she reports. “Any day that I start by walking my dogs ends up being a much better day for me. Moving my body is a good way to kind of ground myself — just seeing the sunrise and getting some sunlight in my eyes.

“There’s something biological about humans and walking,” says Sins. “We’re meant to walk, and there are a lot of studies that show people who walk together bond more. I don’t really know what’s going on there, chemically! I just know that when I’m waking up and starting my day with a walk and a little yoga, I’m happier.”

Sins adds that she’s also much happier when she takes time away from her phone.

“That’s a big thing,” she sighs. “I’m trying hard to limit my scrolling time because I have noticed the toll it has taken on my mental health. I’ve noticed how bad I feel if I spend just an hour scrolling, but it’s a bit of an addiction for me. I’ll just pick up my phone and scroll without even thinking about it. That’s a habit I’ve been trying to break.”

One habit Sins has no intention of ever giving up is her longtime love of reading. She describes herself as something of a “book nerd.” She’s currently reading a lot of Tom Robbins, as well as classic sci-fi author Theodore Sturgeon.

“He’s my favorite right now,” she says. “I suppose I used to be more of a party animal, and now I’m a little boring, which is funny because I think people just assume that porn stars must be wild and crazy. But I love controlled chaos, you know? Put me in an Evil Angel scene with two guys, and you’ll see me become a fucking insane person.”

Sins may be bookish, but she’s also decidedly outdoorsy. She describes herself as a “crunchy girl at heart” who grew up around nature and loves being active — as in hiking, camping, kayaking, paddleboarding and snowboarding. Unfortunately, getting outside to partake in such activities can be tough, given her demanding schedule.

“I’ve been trying to dedicate a lot more time to traveling around California to places like Yosemite or Sequoia National Park,” she says. “Because I live in one of the most beautiful states and it has so many things to offer.”

No Expectations

Surveying the state of the industry today, Sins says she’s both excited and worried about the rise of self-produced content.

“On one hand, I love being able to have a direct line to fans to both sell my content and interact with them,” she says. “But I have also seen how fans form these parasocial relationships with us that can sometimes be quite unhealthy for both parties.

“Sometimes people expect that you’re going to respond every day and post new content multiple times a week, and those expectations can really burn you out and make you feel defeated at times,” Sins observes. “Like you’re never doing enough, and you’re always in competition — not just with other people, but with yourself too.”

“Sometimes when I’m chatting online, I’m like, ‘God, my job is so cool!’” she says. “Then other times, I get nasty comments or weird comments and I feel like, ‘What have I done with my life?’”

“I think we’ve made ourselves too available to fans, and that’s not always a positive thing,” Sins muses. “I think fans should maybe temper their expectations a little bit more, especially because we all know by now that a lot of girls use teams. Fans get this idea that every top-tier porn star is going to respond to them in five minutes — I think it’s made some people’s brains a little squishy.”

Here we glimpse the Charlotte Sins who doesn’t like to be pushed.

“I will tell people to fuck off,” she says. “At the end of the day, I would rather live in a cardboard box than be beholden to other people’s expectations or ideas of me.”

Pandora’s Box

Asked what advice she would offer industry newcomers, Sins urges newbies to be realistic, and honest with themselves about the potential consequences.

“I meet a lot of people who have some delusion that they’re going to just come in for a short amount of time, make a bunch of money, fly under the radar and then disappear — and their friends and family, their boyfriends or girlfriends, will never know,” she says. “If you’re worried about your parents or your past classmates finding out, and that’s something that you just can’t live with, then you shouldn’t do it.

“I’ve met new performers on set who are like, ‘My boyfriend doesn’t know I’m doing this’ or ‘My parents don’t know I’m doing this,’” Sins continues. “I just think that’s an incredibly naive way to go about it. Assume that everyone you’ve ever known will find out. It can be really mentally damaging if you assume that your parents and your siblings won’t find out, and then they confront you.

“Or worse, someone has sent them your porn, and now they’ve all seen your hardcore pornography when you could have just gotten ahead of it yourself and let them know directly,” she cautions. “So if you’re not willing to say it, then you really shouldn’t do it at all.”

When Sins got into the industry, she says, she had no illusions.

“I was like, ‘This is what I’m going to do, I’m putting all my eggs in this basket,’” she recalls. “Because really, once you’ve done it once, you might as well do it 100 times, because you’ve opened Pandora’s box.”

Sins herself has no regrets, however.

“Even the bad things I’ve been through have really been good lessons,” she says. “I’m a pretty resilient person, so I’m good at taking the bad and finding the silver lining in it and learning from it.”
